Strain: ZUC-Lepr+Ste

Symbol: ZUC-Lepr+Ste
Strain: ZUC-Lepr+
Substrain: Ste
RGD ID: 629463
Citation ID: RRID:RGD_629463
Ontology ID: RS:0001095
Alleles: Lepr
Also Known As: Z-Lepr+/Ste;ZUC-Lepr+/Ste; ZUC-Lepr+Ste; Z(Fa/Fa); Z-Lepr+/Ste; ZUC-Lepr^[+Ste]
Type: mutant
Available Source: Not Available
Origination: University of California Davis, Davis, CA
Description: This is the littermate of ZUC-LeprfaSte-/-. The fa mutation occurred spontaneously in the 13M stock and was reported by Lois Zucker and Theodore Zucker in 1960. This was observed during genetic experiments related to coat color and body size. These rats have lean phenotype.
Last Known Status: Unknown

strain_life_disease Surgical injury to the hypothalamus leads to serious kidney lesions which is noticed as these animals reach a year of age. These develop significant albuminuria by 6 weeks of age. Albuminuria was normailzed by the prevention of overeating. Prevention of hyperphagia showed an improvement in the end stage pathology associated with the disease. 628581

strain_phys_biochem These have lactescence (milky appearance) of the blood serum. The total fatty acid level reaches ten times in obese rats as compared to the lean littermates. Blood lipid levels remain high even after 18-hours of fasting. Blood sugar stays in the normal range both in fed or fasted rats. Serum triglycerides were higher in obese rats. Metabolism of arachidonic acid alters the severe insulin resistance that is present in the obese rats. 628581
