Respiratory Models
BN as a model for allergic inflammation: This strain has high IgE and displays inflammatory response to allergens following allergen sensitization and is widely used to study allergic inflammation. (REF RGD ID: 5132882). This is the best model for examining the involvement of smooth muscle cells in the remodeling process (REF RGD ID: 5132882). BN/Hsd rats were sensitized and then exposed to aerosolized ovalbumin from 14-42 days, then treated with inhaled fluticasone or placebo for 30 min before changing each allergen that induced structural changes in the airway including epithelial cell proliferation (REF RGD ID: 5132896).
Occupational asthma can be induced in BN rats by using trimellitic anhydride (TMA) as a sensitizer when applied on the skin. (REF RGD ID: 5132897).
Wistar rats as a model for allergic inflammation: Wistar rats, as compared to BN produce similar but less effective response to OVA sensitization and challenge. (REF RGD ID: 5132884). One set of Wistar male rats were exposed to cigarette smoke and the other one to solid combustible smoke (burning wood and coal). Bronchiolo-alveolar attachment destruction was less in the solid combustible smoke group. (REF RGD ID: 5133421).
SD cannot be used as a model for allergic inflammation: This strain does not display any increase in IgE or allergic reaction under ovalbumin sensitization as compared to the BN rats.(REF RGD ID: 5132882) .
SD/Hsd as a model for experimental emphysema: One dose of porcine pancreatic elastase (PPE) 1ml/kg PPE (120U/kg in saline) given intratracheally was able to induce emphysema. (REF RGD ID: 5133259).
SD as a model for sleep apnea: Unrestrained SD rats have spontaneous respiratory pauses that are related to sleep. (REF RGD ID: 5133422).
SHR/NCrl as a model for experimental bronchitis: SHR and SD/Crl were exposed (nose-only) to sulfur dioxide to induce experimental bronchitis. SHR showed increased bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and neutrophilic inflammation as compared to SD rats. (REF RGD ID: 5132898).
SHR as a model for sleep apnea: SHR rats have more spontaneous and post-sigh sleep apnea during non rapid eye movement and their blood pressure is higher compared to WKY rats (REF RGD ID: 5133423).
Crl:NIH-Foxn1rnu as a model for orthotopic lung cancer: cancer cell suspensions are intravenously injected into the lungs of immunosuppressed nude Crl:NIH-Foxn1rnu, this model can be used to test the efficacy of gene or drug therapy. (REF RGD ID: 5133434).
