The Mouse Adult Gross Anatomy Ontology and Mammalian Phenotype Ontology are downloaded weekly from the Mouse Genome Informatics databases at Jackson Laboratories (ftp://ftp.informatics.jax.org/pub/reports/index.html). For more information about these ontologies, see the MGI Publications Page at http://www.informatics.jax.org/mgihome/other/publications.shtml.
fewer than the expected number of structures located on the apex of the mammary gland on the integument surface into which the lactiferous ducts open; normal female mice have five pairs of mammary glands and nipples (males have no nipples); two pairs of nipples are situated in the abdomino-inguinal region (inguinal group) and three pairs in the ventral thoracic region (pectoral or thoracic group)
Comment:
Variation in number and arrangement of nipples is frequent on some mouse strains. For examples, fewer than five pairs are common in strain A females; more than five pairs in BALB/c females (Little, C.C., and H. MacDonald. 1945. Abnormalities of the mammae in the house mouse. J. Hered. 36: 285-288.)
