A type of pulmonary sequestration that is completely enclosed in its own pleural sac, occurring above, within, or below the diaphragm, and without communication with the tracheobronchial tree.
Comment:
Extralobar sequestration (ELS) may be asymptomatic. Infants with symptomatic lesions may present with respiratory distress, pneumonia, feeding difficulties, hemorrhage, or even congestive heart failure. The sequestered lobe may cause substantial arteriovenous shunting, leading to high-output cardiac failure. Extrapulmonary sequestra nearly all appear on the left side.
