Definition:any structural anomaly of the loose ectomesenchyme-derived connective tissue sac that surrounds the enamel organ and the dental papilla of the developing tooth germ before eruption; it is believed that this tissue contains stem cells and lineage-committed progenitor cells or precursor cells for cementoblasts, periodontal ligament (PDL) cells and osteoblasts; dental follicle cells form the PDL by differentiating into PDL fibroblasts that secrete collagen and interact with fibers on the surface of adjacent bone and cementum
