Definition:A laboratory test which measures the level of free fatty acids in plasma, the fluid portion of the blood in which the particulate components are suspended. Free fatty acids are nonesterified organic acids consisting of a long hydrocarbon chain ending in a carboxyl group, released by the hydrolysis of triglycerides within adipose tissue.
