The urea cycle functions to eliminate increased levels of nitrogen due to amino acid breakdown, and it is regulated by the rate of that catabolic process. Defects in components of the urea cycle can result in hyperammonemia, orotic aciduria and hyperornithinemia-hyperammonemia-homocitrullinemia syndrome (HHH syndrome).
