Description: This strain was initiated by R. Dawley, Sprague-Dawley Company, Madison, Wisconsin in 1925. A hybrid hooded male of unknown origin was mated to a white female (Douredoure strain, probably Wistar) and subsequently to his white female offspring for 7 generations. All the current colonies are from this original stock.
Coat Color: albino
Last Known Status: Unknown

strain_drgs_chems Trans-3,4,5-trihydroxystilbene (resveratrol) a phytoalexin is a potential chemopreventive agent for breast cancer. This inhibits the formation of estrogen-dependent preneoplastic ductal lesions and reduces N-methyl-N-nitrourea-induced tumergenesis. 628526

strain_phys_biochem High salt (8% NaCl)- fed SD rats developed slightly higher systolic blood pressure, hyperglycemic, hyperinsulinemic than controls, with no change in food intake or body weight. Despite the presence of insulin resistance, high salt- fed rats showed enhanced insulin-induced tyrosine phosphorylation of insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS-1), IRS-2 (liver and muscle), and IRS-3 (liver only). 68927
