A WKY rat showing higher serum adiponectin concentration was found in Department of Pathology, Kinki University School of Medicine. In 1974, this strain was transferred from Dr. Okamoto to Kyoto University.
WKY/Kiha (HA-WKY) rats exhibit about 4-fold higher serum adiponectin concentration at 6 weeks of age compared with that of WKY/Izm. When fed high-fat diets, WKY/Kiha rats show hyperinsulinemia and severe hypercholesterolemia. The lack of adiponectin binding to skeletal muscle seems to cause these phenotypes of WKY/Kiha.
