Description

Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, removes excess or damaged cells to maintain tissue homeostasis. The two major apoptotic pathways – the extrinsic, triggered by ligands activating the death receptors and the intrinsic (mitochondrial), triggered by intracellular stresses – converge on the activation of executioner caspases. The ligands and their cognate death receptors belong to the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) superfamilies of ligands and receptors. FasL, Trail and Tnf itself are t
