When endotoxemia, a condition characterized by the presence of endotoxins (bacterial lipopolysacharrides) in the blood is accompanied by hypotension despite adequate fluid infusion, it is called endotoxin shock. On lysis of, or secretion by gram-negative bacteria, bacterial lipopolysacharride (LPS) enters the systemic circulation and initiates a pathophysiologic cascade of pro-inflammatory mediators.
