glomerular sieving coefficient for albumin
This is a calculated measurement of the ability of the kidney glomerulus to keep albumin out of the urine by its filtering function. It is the ratio of the albumin concentration in the filtrate (in Bowman’s space) to the albumin concentration in the plasma (in the glomerular capillaries). The equation to derive this sieving value is based on fluorescence values from intravital multiphoton microscopy: (intensity of Bowman’s space – intensity of background Bowman’s space)/(intensity of capillaries – intensity of background capillaries).
