The portion of the cross-sectional area of a vertebra that corresponds to the area occupied by cancellous or spongy bone, the inner, less dense, more metabolically active type of osseous tissue made up of a network of tiny lattice-shaped spicules often containing marrow. The cross-sectional area of a vertebra is a measurement of the extent of a plane through, i.e. perpendicular to the axis of, a vertebra, any of the individual bones forming the spinal column, the protective bony corridor through which the spinal cord passes.
