The number of individuals in a study population which display diabetes mellitus at a certain point in time compared to the total number of individuals in the study population, expressed as a percentage. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic syndrome of impaired carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism owing to insufficient secretion of insulin or to target tissue insulin resistance and resulting in hyperglycemia due to decreased glucose tolerance.
