The number of new cases of diabetes mellitus appearing in a study population during a specified period compared to the total number of individuals in the study population, expressed as a percentage. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic syndrome of impaired carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism owing to insufficient secretion of insulin or to target tissue insulin resistance and resulting in hyperglycemia due to decreased glucose tolerance.
