Definition:The mitochondrial pathway consists of the synthesis of [2Fe-2S] clusters on scaffold proteins, cluster transfer and formation of mitochondrial [2Fe-2S] proteins, and the synthesis of 4Fe-4S] clusters and the formation of [4Fe-4S] proteins. The first two steps are required for the mitochondrial export and the biogenesis of cytosolic and nuclear Fe-S proteins. This arm of the pathway is usually referred to as the 'core'.
