Definition:The translation pathway that takes place in the mitochondrion. The mitochondrial translation pathway utilizes 22 tRNAs which are encoded in the mitochondrial genome. The mitochondrial genome also encodes 2 ribosomal genes. A small set of mitochondrially-encoded proteins is translated in the mitochondrion. Most others are nuclear genes, synthesized on cytosolic ribosomes and then targeted to the organelle.
