Definition:any structural anomaly of the condensed mesenchymal band formed as migratory myoblasts arising from the myotomes of the occipital somites coalesce beside somite four and extend ventrally as an elongated column; the hypoglossal cord eventually becomes located ventral to the caudal region of the pharynx; most of the myoblasts of the hypoglossal cord remain ventral and shift cranially to form the intrinsic and extrinsic tongue muscles; some of these myoblasts shift dorsally to form the intrinsic laryngeal muscles
