Definition:Any method which measures one or more cytokines, any of a large group of low-molecular-weight proteins (~5-20 kDa in size) secreted by various cell types. Cytokines are involved in cell-to-cell communication, in coordinating antibody and T cell immune interactions, and in regulating immune reactivity. Cytokines include colony-stimulating factors, interferons, interleukins, lymphokines, and members of the TNF and TGF-beta superfamilies.
Comment:Only for use when the specific method of measuring the cytokine such as ELISA, EIA or RIA, is not given.
