Any laboratory test which measures the amount of cholesterol carried by or specifically associated with a particular type of lipoprotein (a complex particle that consists of a protein layer surrounding a core of lipids) in blood. Cholesterol is a eukaryotic sterol that in higher animals is the precursor of bile acids and steroid hormones and a key constituent of cell membranes.
