Definition:A laboratory test which measures the level of free fatty acids in serum, the clear liquid that separates from blood after it has clotted completely, i.e. blood plasma from which fibrinogen has been removed. Free fatty acids are nonesterified organic acids consisting of a long hydrocarbon chain ending in a carboxyl group, released by the hydrolysis of triglycerides within adipose tissue.
