Mycobacteria represent a family of slowly growing bacteria, including M. tuberculosis, the agent of tuberculosis, M. leprae, the agent of leprosy, M. avium complex species, and others. Mycobacteria infection can be asymptomatic or not, and are typically difficult to treat with antibiotics.
