Definition:The transfer of information from one cell to another, where the signal travels from the signal-producing cell to the receiving cell by passive diffusion or bulk flow in intercellular fluid. The signaling cell and the receiving cell are usually in the vicinity of each other.
Comment:This term should be used with caution, and only used when the signaling between cells has been clearly distinguished from endocrine signaling.
