Any measurement of the calories (usually large calories, kilogram calories, dietary calories, or nutritional calories) consumed as food by an organism. A large calorie is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius, a measure of the energy which an organism can derive by metabolizing the food.
