Term:
squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck tumor number
A value or quantity determined by count of tumors arising in the lip, oral cavity, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, pharynx, and/or larynx, from the uncontrolled multiplication of cells of the epithelium, or of cells showing the particular cytological characteristics of squamous cell differentiation, such as the presence of keratin, tonofilament bundles, or desmosomes, structures involved in cell-to-cell adhesion. A tumor is an abnormal growth of tissue resulting from uncontrolled, progressive multiplication of cells and serving no physiological function.
Comment:
Note that "tumors of the head and neck" or "cancers of the head and neck" refers to a specific group of neoplasms, not just to any tumor located anywhere in the head or neck of an individual. According to the National Cancer Institute "Cancers of the brain, the eye, the esophagus, and the thyroid gland, as well as those of the scalp, skin, muscles, and bones of the head and neck, are not usually classified as head and neck cancers".
