Definition:A racemate comprising equimolar amounts of (R)- and (S)-esmolol. A cardioselective and short-acting beta1 receptor blocker with rapid onset but lacking intrinsic sympathomimetic and membrane-stabilising properties, it is used as the hydrochloride salt in the management of supraventricular arrhythmias, and for the control of hypertension and tachycardia during surgery. While the S enantiomer possesses all of the heart rate control, both enantiomers contribute to lowering blood pressure.
Synonyms:exact_synonym: rac-methyl 3-{4-[2-hydroxy-3-(propan-2-ylamino)propoxy]phenyl}propanoate
 related_synonym: 3-[4-(2-Hydroxy-3-isopropylamino-propoxy)-phenyl]-propionic acid methyl ester;   Formula=C16H25NO4;   Methyl 4-(2-hydroxy-3-((1-methylethyl)amino)propoxy)benzenepropanoate;   esmololum;   methyl p-(2-hydroxy-3-(isopropylamino)propoxy)hydrocinnamate
