| RGD Definition | ||||
"EST stands for Expressed Sequence Tags, a partial sequence of a randomly chosen cDNA, obtained from the results of a single DNA sequencing reaction. EST's are used both to identify transcribed regions in genomic sequence and to characterize patterns of gene expression in the tissue that was the source of the cDNA." [ back to top ] |

| Finding EST information | ||||
Using the General Search The general RGD search available at the top of each page is a quick route to finding ESTs. This will search for EST symbols (Accession numbers) and aliases. (See General RGD Search help for more information).

ESTs have links to the sequences associated with them (Primer and clone sequences where available), mapping data with associated maps, and external links to GenBank allowing access to the NCBI resources. VCMap is primarily based around EST data. Many of the ESTs are part of the VCMap dataset determining syntenic regions between rat and human and rat and mouse. [ back to top ] |

| The EST Report | ||||
| The following fields are present on the EST report:
The official EST symbol (usually GenBank Accession number) GenBank EST definition line Symbols that have been used to refer to this EST in the past, often Iowa's
internal EST code. Gene(s) known to be identified by the EST sequence. The Primer and/or clone sequence for this EST shown 5' to 3'. Primer locations
on the clone sequence are indicated by blue underlined sequence. Mapping information contained in RGD is shown for the EST itself if it has
been mapped directly onto one of the standard maps or has been located on the
cytogenic map by FISH or similar techniques. The mapping information is linked
to further information as shown below: Where available, links to VCMap are also provided
to allow access to the VCMap bin reports showing mapped and predicted locations
for markers and the syntenic regions in Mouse and Human. Links to other databases, which have information about this EST. The links
are grouped by parent database and each link has a user-friendly text (e.g.
PubMed citation, LocusLink gene symbol, etc.) followed in parentheses by the
actual accession number used in the parent database (PubMed ID, LocusLink number). References curated by the RGD curation team that contain information pertaining
to this EST. [ back to top ] |
