This transgenic strain contains the enhanced green fluorescent protein gene under the control of the human ubiquitin-C promoter with a the woodchuck hepatitis virus posttranscriptional regulatory element (WRE). This transgenic strain was made by injecting the lentivirus vector containing the GFP construct (vector name FUGW) into SD rat embryos. Animals that exhibited fluorescence of tails where then mated. The colony was transferred from Carlos Lois, California Institute of Technology, Pasedena, California to the Rat Resource and Research Center in 2002. This strain has been maintained by backcrossing carrier males to SD stock females in order to segregate transgenes and maintain the SD background. The strain now carries a single transgene which is located at chromosome 14q21.
