Pigmented strain that exhibits retinal (photoreceptor) degeneration due to a mutation in the Mertk gene. The gene is expressed in the retinal pigment epithlium. The mutation leads to the prevention of phagocytosis of rod outer segments, with subsequent photoreceptor cell death. The rate of degeneration and loss of photoreceptor cells in the pigmented dystrophic retinas is slowed by about 7-10 days in the central/posterior retina and significantly more in the peripheral retinal in the superior hemisphere when compared to pink-eyed rats carrying the Mertk mutation.
