Citation ID: RRID:RGD_10045545
Ontology ID: RS:0003921
Also Known As: CDs/Sasz
Type: inbred
Available Source: Not Available
Origination: Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School, Jerusalem, Israel
Description: Original breeders are from a colony at Hadassah University Hospital, Jerusalem, Israel: Professor Cohen AM et al. initiated the Cohen diabetic (CD) rat model at the Hadassah University Hospital in the 1950s to examine the role of constitutional (genetic) and environmental (dietary) factors in the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Since 1996, the original colony underwent a secondary inbreeding by Dr. Sarah Zangen designated by Prof. Cohen as responsible for the Cohen diabetic (CD) rat colony.
Inbred Generations: 60+
Last Known Status: Unknown

strain_characteristics Using a more stringent criteria Dr. Zangen has set the threshold for the sensitive rats (CDs) at blood glucose levels >200 mg/dl following 1 month of a diabetogenic-diet (HSD) feeding. The CD rat model consists of two contrasting sub-strains: The CDs rat and the CD resistant (CDr) rat that sustains normoglycemia when fed either the HSD or a regular diet (RD) 10045544
strain_life_disease The sensitive Cohen diabetic rat (CDs) develops hyperglycemia (> 200 mg/dl ) when fed for 1 month on a diabetigenic high sucrose (72%) low copper(1.2 ppm) diet (HSD) but maintain normal blood glucose levels (<140 mg/dl) when fed on a regular diet (RD). 10045544
