Olfactory receptor genes were localized and their function predicted through a combination of a "homology-based identification procedure [and] manual curation". The method cited is that of Young et al, Hum Mol Genet. 2002 Mar 1;11(5):535-46, PMID:11875048, which includes sequence alignment to a set of olfactory receptor gene sequences from other species and prediction of protein sequences in the matched gene predictions followed by manual or semi-automated filtering of the results to reduce false positives.
Assignment of Gene Ontology Molecular Function and Biological Process annotations to putative rat olfactory receptor genes were based on the similarity between these genes and consensus sequences of olfactory receptor gene families in other species.
