Dr. Jacob received a 2 year, ARRA funded, grant from NHLBI to refine a new methodology for site directed mutagenesis in the rat. Zinc finger nucleases are being used to knock out a large number of genes involved with hypertensive, genetically susceptible and normotensive rat strains. The overall goal is to use this novel technique to knockout genes in hypertensive and normotensive animal models to test the role of these genes in the vascular and renal mechanisms controlling blood pressure.
