Norepinephrine and epinephrine, whose synthesis and release are prompted by various but distinct stresses, act as neurotransmitters and hormones that signal via the various adrenergic receptors, G-protein coupled receptors (GPCR) that couple to distinct G alpha subunits of heterotrimeric G proteins. The beta receptors, for which epinephrine appears to be a favorite agonist, couple to the Gs alpha subunit leading to activation of adenylyl cyclases, cAMP production, and subsequent triggering of PK
