The portion of the cross-sectional area of a bone that corresponds to the area occupied by cancellous or spongy bone, the inner, less dense, more metabolically active type of osseous tissue made up of a network of tiny lattice-shaped spicules often containing marrow. The cross-sectional area of bone is the measurement of the extent of a plane through, that is, perpendicular to the longest axis of a bone, the hard, rigid form of connective tissue constituting most of the skeleton of vertebrates and composed chiefly of calcium salts.
