Measurement of the entire cross-sectional area of the tibia, that is, the extent of a plane perpendicular to the longest axis of the tibia and bounded by the periosteum, the thick fibrous membrane covering the entire surface of a bone except its articular cartilage and serving as an attachment for muscles and tendons. The tibia is the medial and larger of the two bones of the lower leg of bipeds or hindlimb of quadrupeds which articulates with the femur, fibula, and talus.
