The portion of the cross-sectional area of the femoral neck that corresponds to the area of the cortex, the outer, more dense layer of the bone. The cross-sectional area of the femoral neck is a measurement of the extent of a plane through, that is, perpendicular to the longest axis of, the heavy, flattened, pyramidal process of bone connecting the head and the shaft of the femur, the major bone in the upper portion of the hindlimb of quadrupeds or the lower limb of bipeds.
